Looking for a dessert that's both easy and sure to please? This is the one! Serve it with berries and whipped cream for a special treat.

Those of us with gluten allergies or celiac disease are somewhat used to interrogating wait staff on what we can or cannot eat.  It's a totally different experience at Company Café in Dallas, Texas.  Gluten eaters may find themselves asking for the gluten version of things because pancakes, French toast and bagels are gluten free, unless you request the full flour version.

Prior to my recent trip to the Poli Grappa factory in the Veneto region I thought grappa was a clear liquor, like grain alcohol, that one drank at big fat Greek weddings. Turns out I was a bit mistaken.
botttles of Balsamic
Friday, November 18th, 2011
Ever wonder why some balsamic vinegars cost $5 at the local grocery store, but other smaller, albeit fancier, bottles and found only at specialty food stores cost $100?  It's all about the aging. You may also wonder if the price difference is worth it. After a tasting at Acetaia San Giacomo, I argue that there is a place for all versions, and even if you can't afford the $100 bottle vinegar, you can enjoy the unique, fabulous, sweet and sour taste of great balsamic.
panettone
Monday, November 7th, 2011
For this holiday season, how about a nice panettone!  No, it's NOT a fruitcake.  And it's not just for Christmas celebrations, although its history relates to the winter season. This Italian confectionery is a sweet leavened fluffy bread that may contain candied fruit (raisins, figs, cherries, apricot, or pear), almonds, or chocolate drops.  Loaves may also be flavored with Prosecco wine, cinnamon or cloves. Really yummy and light.

When most people think of France, they think of Paris. But, the diverse region of Languedoc-Rousillion in the south, just across the border of Spain and a short drive north of Girona and Barcelona, is an enchanting place to see. The Languedoc region is often called the "poor man's south of France."
paella
Friday, October 14th, 2011
Paella is a typical Spanish dish traditionally cooked in a "paellera," a round flat pan with two handles, from which it can be served at the table.

The Casablanca Valley, a beautiful area about 45 minutes from downtown Santiago, is lush with vines and filled with wineries. Driving to the coastal cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar last January, we stopped at the Casas del Bosque vineyard in the Casablanca Valley for a tour, tasting and lunch.
Tapas
Wednesday, October 5th, 2011
Ferran Adria, the Catalan chef, performed cooking experiments which forever changed the El Bulli restaurant's place in cooking history and put this region of Spain in the center of a culinary paradigm shift.

There seems to be a lot of confusion around whole grains, and good and bad carbohydrates.  I think the pandemonium occurred somewhere along the path of human food consumption when someone erroneously stated that all carbohydrates were bad. Who knows how it happened? I can only guess that maybe an innocent victim was wolfing down an oversized bagel too quickly and it got lodged in his throat.

Diner is an old fashioned diner car made into a very hip Brooklyn place. No reservations. No menus, just a handwritten list of beautifully conceived and well-executed dishes. You know how hard it is if you don't eat beef to find a main course that sounds like something you really want? They always have a fish and a chicken dish that I have to seriously deliberate over.
Potato Salad
Friday, July 15th, 2011
Potato salad is the perfect accompaniment to a summer picnic.  There are many styles of salad prepared with potatoes as the base and each of us has a favorite.  I prefer mine made with red potatoes (skins on) and with a touch of mustard to add a little zip.  After some experimenting I have perfected my recipe.
Watermelon Martini
Thursday, July 7th, 2011
There is a saying; "accident is the mother of invention". In my case circumstance is the mother of invention and it led to the creation of a very delicious watermelon martini.
Boatyard bar and grill
Tuesday, June 14th, 2011
We may have missed the opportunity to dine with Michelle and Sasha Obama by going to the Boatyard Bar and Grill 2 days too late, but we didn't miss the chance for great seafood.
apple apps
Thursday, June 9th, 2011
We love to eat and enjoy cooking. However, coordinating dinner either at home or out can sometimes present challenges.  Free smart phone apps make our lives easier. Whether it's figuring out which fish, fruits and veggies are safe, what to buy for a recipe, or when all else fails--how to get a reservation fast, there are apps for that.

Seeing that it's springtime and everything is just so GREEN... Pesto came to mind. It reminds me of this time of year when basil starts to take advantage of all this sunshine and grows like crazy. Enjoy!

Pesto... the word comes from the Italian verb pestare which means to crush, to trample, to pound.

Another beautiful day and a late start. Our hotel, the Accademia, is perfect for this kind of morning-breakfast is lavish and served until 10:00 and it's set just off a pedestrian street with the best shopping in Verona. We found plenty to occupy us before climbing back into the van for the return to Milan. And we must admit that there were many more bags to load after some serious shopping.

Hiking the Cinque Terre trails and wandering through the charming towns on the sea left us a little tired and very hungry. Our dinner plans called for us to take the train into Monterosso and dine at the home of Daniella and Piero. Arriving early at the station, we took our places on the proper platform-now confident in our train skills.
Friday, May 13th, 2011
After a free evening last night, and trying to sleep through the sounds of nature in the form of very loud tree frogs, some of us got up early for a morning hike. Blue skies, crowing roosters, and farmers' fields gleaming in the sunlight beckoned. We wandered into people's backyards and into the hills full of hazelnut and fruit trees.
