The best thing about winter is that we can transplant shrubs and small trees in North Texas and give their roots time to establish before the heat of summer. Transplant in January and February when plants are dormant, and before early March when our spring warm up begins.

I can recall as a young boy my fascination with "automatic doors." Stepping on those floor mats was the solution to taking my dad places in his wheelchair...I could keep pushing him, as doors 'magically' opened for us. I didn't know the term Universal Design, yet I lived it.

Winter is a great time to plan a landscape of your dreams. The basics of residential landscape design planning are an essential part of creating an outdoor living area you'll love. Your front yard and back yard landscaping design will blend the natural grounds surrounding a home with its architecture to create a beautiful, unified and inviting place to live.

"We want this to be our last home and we want it to work for us, as we age."

Our architectural firm is hearing the statement above more frequently than ever before from clients. After some demographic and marketing research, we determined that this is not just our trend; it's a paradigm shift in housing needs for the entire U.S. If you want your current home or the one you will design in the future to be flexible for your continuous use, an understanding of the phenomena of "aging in place" is important.

Many cities in north Texas have increased their water restrictions for this winter.  While the temperatures have cooled, it was a long hot brutal summer.  Our plant materials did not get the moisture they needed, even with proper irrigation.  Recent rains have helped plants recover, however a dry winter is forecast for the north Texas area.  While you may or may not live in an area with major water restrictions, we feel it is still wise to help conserve as much water as possible at all times.

Want to buy your friends the gift that keeps on giving? You can always buy the Gift of Green, especially house plants and orchids. However, this year I'd like to share with you an idea for an outdoor plant that is truly a gift: Camellia. It's a plant for WOMEN WHO DO TOO MUCH and want blooms in their yard during winter time.

As the Leaves turn to brilliant fall color -

Plant: Spring bulbs including daffodils, narcissus, jonquils and grape hyacinths directly into your landscape as you buy them. Use Cyclamen in the shady areas. However, Tulips and Dutch hyacinths should be refrigerated at 45 degrees until mid-December. Continue to plant pansies, snapdragons, pinks, flowering cabbage and flowering kale.

It was a long hot summer in North Texas and it may be next year as well. A recent article in the local press had this quote:

"Recent predictions by the National Weather Service of a 50 percent chance there will be another La Niña in the southern Pacific Ocean this fall can be taken two ways - with optimism or pessimism

If you want to look at a market that makes residential real estate even in say, Detroit, look good, look at second homes. Last year, the median price of a vacation home in the U.S. fell 11%. Compare that to what the National Association of Realtors tells us the ordinary primary residence did - fell 5 percent.

Now is the time to

Plant fall-flowering bulbs and fall annual and perennials towards the end of the month including daffodils and grape hyacinths. Plant cool-season annuals such as pansies, pinks (Dianthus), snapdragons, and flowering cabbage and kale now that temperatures have dropped.

Clients often assure me that the real reason they cannot get into the kitchen and cook a wholesome meal is that they do not have the proper pots and pans, or other equipment to get started.  That's hogwash!  For basic cooking purposes, all you really need to get started is one large frying pan and one large soup pot or six- to eight-quart stockpot, both with lids.  That's it.

I was in Carmel last week, and I saw The Butterfly House, probably the most amazing beach house in the world. And guess what, it's on the market! The Butterfly House is one of only five or six truly beach-front properties in Carmel and on beautiful Scenic Drive. And in Carmel I learned that Dick Cheney seriously looked at buying this house at one time as a second home!

If your yard were indoor space, the front yard would be the living room and the back would be the family room. The front is public space while the backyard is typically less formal and often is designed for multiple specific functions.

A backyard garden with a special welcoming feel for you, your family and friends invites you to have a seat looking out or back at your home.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast
...'Good fences make good neighbors'.

At this moment I am in the process of redefining the way I live.  This is the time to make changes.  For a start I am leaving Dallas, placing distance between myself and my much loved friends and family and moving to Europe to start a new page in my life.

I have disposed of my house and my furniture although I am still left with a container full of "things dear to me".

There are many plants in your yard that can be used in a vase to decorate your table or countertop.

This weekend I chose color by cutting a Caladium leaf, Liatris and Daisy, then complemented them with greens from a Japanese Holly frond, Cast Iron leaf and some Lirioipe.

So many of us got into landscaping because we love plants. That love of plants can sometimes be our downfall when it comes to design.  While a cottage look with lots of different plants can be attractive, simplifying a design can yield big results. More isn't always better!

A small community near the Texas town of Elm Mott is a worthwhile trip 'down the road on 35,' whether you are a professional needing advice on sustainable farming or building practices, or a family seeking fun in an idyllic educational setting. Homemade pastries and lunch at an affordable price is a surprise bonus.
