Overcoming adversity is tough for adults and seemingly impossible for kids who have no support or connections. The Children's Defense Fund's (CDF) Beat the Odds program, created in 1990, has the backs of those kids. The program identifies young people who've faced difficult situations, found a way to excel academically, and give back to their communities.

CDF Beat the Odds scholarships were awarded in Dallas for the first time in 2010!

CDF hosts one annual fundraiser in Dallas for programs here in Texas, designed to celebrate and bestow scholarships and honor youngsters who've thrived and shone in harsh conditions. One of our favorite Good News Girlz, Sarah Palisi Chapin, CEO of Hail Merry Foods, is chair of the Dallas luncheon on April 27, 2011 at the Frontiers of Flight  museum. With her honorary chairs, Pat and Emmitt Smith, Sarah and the CDF will celebrate these bright, inspiring kids and raise funds for the Beating the Odds program. Seven scholarships ranging from $5k to $20k will be awarded thanks to the generosity of Fossil, Brinker, Jersey Mike's Subs, Pizza Hut, Inc and GMAC. Your contributions and attendance can make even more of a difference!

Marian Wright Edelman, a recipient of the Medal of Freedom from the President of the United States, and founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund (CDF), will attend and award seven scholarships to local students. Buy tickets online to attend the luncheon or donate to this admirable cause.
