La Rosa dei Venti

People come from around the world to see Leonardo Da Vinci's fresco of The Last Supper in the Santa Maria della Grazie. Now there's another reason to make the trip to Milan. La Rosa dei Venti, a small restaurant just off the Corso Sempione, is warm and cozy, and serves excellent food in a professional manner.

But wait there's more. For gluten intolerant folk around the world, La Rosa dei Venti is more than a place to visit while in Milan; it's a destination trip. When the waiter told me that their chef has celiac disease, I said, "That's wonderful!" I corrected myself quickly and expressed my sympathy, but for intolerant folk, it's terrific to encounter a chef who embraces gluten free cooking. The server wowed me with his understanding of the menu.

House made pasta, gluten free and otherwise, is served primi piati in portions large enough to be a meal, but I didn't stop there. For almost three years I've watched longingly as others in my party enjoyed fried calamari, knowing I'd never eat it again.  At La Rosa dei Venti, the chef not only dusts his fish in rice flour, he keeps a separate fryer just for non-wheat purposes. I ate my entire portion as well as dessert.

Every dessert on the menu from Tiramisu to apple pie comes in a gluten free version. Wheat flour options are also available and probably as good because they are made in house every day.

My entire meal was wonderful and from the sounds of satisfaction from other, gluten-eating patrons, I could tell that this chef knows his stuff. And truly, I am sorry for the chef, but find myself wishing there were more of his kind out there.
