Love, loss, heartache, redemption...sex, drugs and rock 'n roll....boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, but wins her back....standard chick lit fare - except that this is Marian Keyes.

The backdrop for The Brightest Star in the Sky is a four unit apartment building at  66 Star Street, Dublin, Ireland. The residents are being observed by a sparky sprite whose purpose is not disclosed immediately, but who is immensely interested in the activities, and the character, of those inhabitants. With our tour guide, we look in on the lives of a 40-year old single, career woman and her 40-plus commitment-phobe boyfriend, an incredibly insightful  elderly woman, two single immigrants from Poland and their lively little roommate, and young couple three years married.

At first, it appears that their lives are separate and distinct, but as the action unfolds, their paths become intertwined and their stories revealed. All of the characters have their own challenges, but as with most Marian Keyes books, there is a deep, dark issue that needs to be addressed. And  is addressed as only Ms Keyes can do, with empathy, humility and, where appropriate, humor.

The book is on the long side at over 450 pages, but to us, it flew by. The characters are fun, engaging and real. They have authentic emotions, concerns, reactions, and patience. Admittedly, some act with more strength than we might, but not unnaturally so. While the approach is mystical and spiritual, the issues are definitely real and timely.

Tamara's favorite scene in the book? Let's just say that it involves an icy meteor. And poetic justice.

Judy's favorite characters in the book? Jemima, the 88 year old woman who works part time on the psychic hot-line, and her dog, Grudge.
