We may have missed the opportunity to dine with Michelle and Sasha Obama by going to the Boatyard Bar and Grill 2 days too late, but we didn't miss the chance for great seafood. Technically in Eastport, the Boatyard Bar and Grill is a bit out of the way of the Main Street touristy traffic of Annapolis.  It's a short walk from the Main Street area over the Spa Creek Bridge, and located right across the street from the Annapolis City Marina. Once there, we were lucky to get a seat on the front patio in the shade.

My husband tried one of the microbrews on the menu, the Doggy Style IPA from the Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland. We started with a cup of Maryland Crab Soup, dense with crab, peppers, onions, potatoes, carrots, peas and tomatoes in a chicken and beef broth, and a yummy, perfectly dressed Classic Caesar Salad.

Prince Edward Island Mussels

We stayed on the appetizer portion of the menu for our main courses. My husband ordered the Prince Edward Island Mussels in a broth of sweet onion, garlic, herbs, and white wine, and I had the Steamed Shrimp ala Chesapeake served with sweet onion and house made cocktail sauce.  Both came with a hunk of crusty French bread. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and larger than I had expected. The mussels, though small, were very tasty and the broth amazing.  The menu includes several non-seafood items as well for the landlubbers in the group, including 90 miles to Cuban Chicken and Mama's Meatloaf Platter.  We didn't try them, but I'm sure they are great.

This was a great way to spend a leisurely lunch, and not too far from Baltimore or Washington DC.
