death II
We recently went to see the Chris Rock re-make of Death at a Funeral. The humor was broad and the antics got a bit out of hand, but it's a great premise and a fun way to spend a rainy Saturday morning, which is what we did.  Judy enjoyed it. Penni wasn't that crazy about it. The difference -- Penni saw the original Death at a Funeral when it came out in 2007.

Here's the premise: A well-respected, successful man with two sons dies. His friends and family gather for the funeral. The younger son is a published author with fans and supporters even among the funeral attendees. The older son has spent much of his youth taking care of his parents and resenting his brother.  Wacky relatives and unexpected guests reveal that there was more going in the father's life than anyone knew.

Penni's comments: When I saw the 2007 British version of Death at a Funeral I was laughing in the aisles; so taken with the wit and humor that was low-key and clever.  Now, maybe I was tainted by the way I felt about the 2007 version but, I was not as crazy about the America version.  It seems  that in general, American comedies go for the obvious laughs while the British version is subtle and therefore more unexpected and funnier.  But, with that said the premise of the movies is the same and is worth a look see...but if you can find a copy of the British version I believe you will enjoy it and have more fun with it.

Hey Penni! Awesome original!

I saw the original version with Frank Oz, the director and famous voice of Ms. Piggy in the audience. I laughed harder during this movie than any I can remember in my recent history (with the exception of "Silver Streak" and "Blazing Saddles" in college but that is another story). The entire audience was falling in the aisles. I knew I was a bit prejudiced because anytime I see a movie with the filmmaker in attendance I think it's brilliant. Their energetic presence must add something to the experience. Nonetheless, it is one of the few movies I wanted to buy and keep in my movie library. It is right up there with "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" whenever I feel blue.
