Simplify Your Design for Big Results!
Friday, July 8th, 2011
An important aspect of design is a project having a cohesive feel. This can be accomplished by having a strong focal point, and using design elements like repetition and harmony in a design. A focal point will lead your eye to a certain place in the yard. This can be done by adding a pot of color, a specimen plant or even a bench or seating to draw the eye. Repetition can be accomplished by using the exact same element over and over again or using materials with the same color and texture. Adding repetition to the landscape will automatically make it more cohesive. Harmony is achieved when like elements work well together. They aren't the exact same elements as in repetition but two different elements that compliment each other. Using flowers close to each other on the color wheel, using all fine textured plants in an area, complimenting a stone with a gravel of similar color will produce harmony in your landscape.
Now that you have a strong focal point, you've used repitition to make your design more cohesive and you've added elements that are harmonious, let's take another look at your design. Is there anything you could leave out? Sometimes removing just one grouping of plants or an extra pot of color can simplifiy a landscape and let the other elements stand out. If you want your focal point to really show, make sure the landscape leads you to it. A simple solution can many times be the best solution allowing your other design elements to shine. In this day and time, who couldn't use a little simplification in their life? Make your outdoor space an oasis to come home to and relax in everyday. Simplify the landscape and deliver big results!
