Sit Down for a Spell

If your yard were indoor space, the front yard would be the living room and the back would be the family room. The front is public space while the backyard is typically less formal and often is designed for multiple specific functions.

A backyard garden with a special welcoming feel for you, your family and friends invites you to have a seat looking out or back at your home.

Whether you're a homeowner striving for an Entertaining/Family Area, a Recreational Area or a Specialty garden in your backyard, your landscape will benefit from a place to sit and rest while "you smell the roses". Here we will focus on creating a sitting area in your backyard.

These areas are like rooms in your home. The "walls" are made by positioning the trees and shrubs. And just like your interior space, it's typical to place a sitting area in each room of the landscape.

There are many kinds of outdoor furniture to consider. One of the most popular is teak wood outdoor furniture. It is extremely beautiful and long lasting.

Teak wood is used for many shapes of furniture including a table and chairs, lounges, Adirondack chairs or even a teak furniture bar. Teak outdoor furniture also works well as deck or patio furniture.

Teak wood outdoor furniture works well in many kinds of landscapes. It lends itself to natural landscapes due to the beauty of the wood and low maintenance. Many beautiful outdoor garden benches are made of teak.

It looks beautiful on stone and pavers. And of course, teak outdoor furniture is very inviting when just set on lawn or in the shade of the trees.

Another frequently used type of furniture is wicker outdoor furniture. This can be regular wicker or one of the newer synthetic types for low maintenance. Other seat choices include metal furniture, or the rustic look from blocks or wood or boulders.

Where do you place a bench or sitting area?

  • Paths through woods - if you have woods on your property, consider enjoying them by creating paths with a bench adjacent to the path.
  • Area for hammock - do you have a couple of closely located old, large trees? This is perfect place for a hammock!
  • Or a quiet sitting area away form the activity in your yard.

Experiment in your backyard and create a sitting area. It's good to get off your feet and pause to take in the beauty of your surroundings
