There are the standard gifts; the tie, the dress shirt, breakfast in bed.  If you are looking for a gift for dad, the father or step-father of your children, a grandfather, father-to-be, we have a few ideas to share:

For the humorist: Did you grow up with a dad that made a pun out of everything - to the point the you didn't know whether to laugh or cry?  The perfect gift:  "The Pun Also Rises: How the Humble Pun Revolutionized Language, Changed History, and Made Wordplay More Than Some Antics" by John Pollack. I hope my dad isn't reading this, because this book is on it's way from Amazon! Another book Tamara suggested for the punster in your life (she is one herself) - "I Never Metaphor I Didn't Like: A Comprehensive Compilation of History's Greatest Analogies, Metaphors, and Similes" by Mardy Grothe.

For the reader: the Kindle is the perfect gift! It's still the best reader out there, and so handy.  Load it with a few titles you know he will enjoy reading.

FD Facial

For the guy who needs to relax: A day at the spa - yes, it's not just for girls.  Or if your budget doesn't allow for a full day, book a mani/pedi at your local salon.  Men may resist, but once they've done it, they are sold.  If you are buying for a spouse - a couples massage could be the ticket! Or at least a great excuse for YOU to get a massage.

FD George Bike

For the cyclist: can always use a new pair of gloves or a cool shirt!

For the chef (or wanta be): A chef's knife or cooking classes.  Check out your local cooking schools for classes. Sur La Table often has fun classes, and Tamara told me recently that she and her husband took a bread baking class there and had a blast.

FD Golf

For the golfer: a round of golf at an interesting new course, or new clubs if you have a fat wallet.

For the sports enthusiast: Tickets to a local sporting event.  It's baseball season and many teams offer ticket specials - check them out at www.MLB.com

FD Baseball Fans

From the son with limited funds: I'll do everything you would do today gift certificate.  Start with joining him at Starbucks for coffee (you pick up the tab).  Mow the lawn.  Make him lunch and hamburgers on the grill for dinner. Promise him that the next time your mom wants to go shopping for something special, you'll take her.

FD Dad and Child

From the daughter with limited funds: take Dad out for breakfast or lunch, just the two of you. Indulge in "guy" things, since he has had years of "girl" things. Go to the driving range or a baseball game.   Take him to see a movie that he wants to watch (no chick flicks).  Above all, don't mention your time of the month, that you are looking at wedding dresses (sure to make Dad cry), or admit that Dad isn't your main man. Keep the illusion as long as possible.
